Today, Year 4 worked with the resident artist, Ian Whitmore, for a workshop around the Take One Picture painting we have been looking closely at over the last couple of months. They studied the painting and poses within it. They then created some amazing outline drawings and felt representations of other various poses chosen by the children themselves. The children looked at the work of contemporary artist: Julian Opie. They created their own poses on paper which was then copied onto felt. They cut out their felt silhouettes. These will then be added to, to create an Opie style collection of posed figures which will then be displayed on colourful felt backgrounds.

Collaging the background
Year 4 looked at collaging techniques. They chose contrasting colours from magazines. They then tore their chosen colours into small pieces to collage their background of their sunflower painting. Next week they will complete their collages and add finishing touches by sewing into their work.

Mixing tints and shades to paint a sunflower
Year 4 looked carefully at a sunflower painted by Van Gogh. They then practised mixing tints and shades by adding white and black to yellow respectively. They then painted their sunflower after carefully sketching the outline. Next week they will collage the background.

Expressing opinion about Van Gogh’s art
The children chose a few images of Van Gogh’s art. They then expressed their opinion about one of their chosen pieces, explaining what they like about that particular painting. They then wrote down the name of their favourite painting, giving reasons for their choice.

Finding out about Van Gogh
The children watched a video and slides about the life of Van Gogh. They listened to a song about him and looked at some of his artwork. They then presented their work as a poster.

Medium term plan – Van Gogh

Year 4 will be finding out about Vincent Van Gogh and his art. They will explore personal opinion about some of his artworks, mix colours to create shades and tints. They will also sew into their art, sketch and create a piece of art in the impressionist style.
Roman mosaics- the finale
Year 4 grouted their mosaics. The final step in completing their designs. They came out really well. Tiler of the future?? Well done year 4.

Christmas cards
Year 4, learnt how to transfer an image of a Gingerbread house scene onto another piece of paper. They then outlined their transfer and coloured it in. These images will be copied onto card, making a special Christmas card to take home.
Red with a sprinkling of gold
Year 4 created a Christmas tree collage using red paper . They then embellished their trees with red and gold sparkles. Year 6 created a Christmas tree collage using gold paper. The trees will be adding a splash of colour to the COVID testing centre in Newport.
